Last week, I was in Wichita all week working the first and second rounds of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and I took my computer with me, thinking I would have time to get some blogging done during the week.
And now that is laughable!
The only thing I had time to do before and after basketball was sleep (minimally), shower, eat a breakfast sandwich and down 16 oz of water (because that was about as much water as I would intake that day). The only relaxing things I did was take a hot bath when I would get home usually around 12:30 AM (because I was freezing at the gym every day!) and I did manage to sneak in the end of ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ one morning before I had to be at the gym!
But other than that, my hours were spent at Intrust Bank Arena.
And it was awesome!
I’ve said before that one of the best things about working in a college athletic department is that during this time of year, the TV’s are on, with basketball on them all day long. I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than watching basketball this time of year!
And since I left my sports information post, I have definitely not been able to tune in and watch March Madness all day long like the good ‘ol days. Fast forward 12 years and last week, I got to play the role of a “working girl” … and got to watch basketball every day.
I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that I worked extremely hard for four days. Or that at times, I wasn’t uber bored. I had moments of doing real work, but most of the time, I was wondering around, answering questions that media members or sports information directors had. Sometimes I bossed around a Wichita State grad assistant. I also drank a ridiculous amount of Coke, which doesn’t seem like something I would be bothered with most of the time. Except I would wake up in the mornings and feel like I was hungover.
And I had drank NOTHING.
I also tie that to not going to bed until between the hours of 12:30 – 2 AM most of the days I was there. What was I doing that kept me up that late?
I don’t know! Some nights I was helping with a seating chart and labels to put down on press row. One night, the final game didn’t finish until after midnight. On Friday night, I should have went to bed at a decent time, but instead was wired from the K-State game and just … awake…. until 12:30. And then Saturday, we were finished by 12:30, I was home by 1, and asleep by 1:30.
People, I haven’t seen those times of day in YEARS!
But was it worth it?
I would do it over again in two weeks, if they asked (not this week, I need to recover first).
I have said it many times, but the reason I LOVED sports information, despite the LONG days and hours and the wanting to punch things at times, was the people. BECAUSE you work these long days and long hours, the people you are surrounded by better be people you enjoy being around or you should maybe find a new profession. I truly loved my people at Wichita State and this week was no different! I met a new group of people, got to see some of my “old people” and sent many messages and pictures to those that couldn’t be there … in hopes that I have twisted their arm into working the tournament in Wichita when it is there in three years.
Because I will be there! With Tylenol PM, probably some gray hair and some smarts about drinking less Coke. More water.
What a week!
PS. HOW ABOUT THOSE CATS!!!!!!!!
